Herman Melville
1819–1891
American writer (1819–1891) who drew on years at sea for novels and stories of obsession, labour and belief. Moby-Dick (1851) was a commercial failure that later became a landmark of American literature. Melville spent his final decades in obscurity as a customs inspector; the short novel Billy Budd was published only after his death.
