Jane Austen
1775–1817
English novelist (1775–1817) whose six major novels are set among the landed gentry of Georgian England. Working with irony, free indirect speech and closely observed manners, she turned courtship and money into serious moral comedy. Published anonymously in her lifetime, her books — Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma and others — became central to the English novel.
