Louisa May Alcott

1832–1888

American writer (1832–1888), raised in New England reform circles. Drawing on her own family, Little Women (1868–69) followed the four March sisters and became one of the most enduring American novels for young readers. She also wrote pseudonymous thrillers and supported abolition and women's suffrage.
