English playwright and poet (1564–1616), born in Stratford-upon-Avon and active in London's theatre world. He wrote some 38 plays — tragedies, comedies and histories — plus 154 sonnets, shaping English drama and the language itself. Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth remain among the most performed works in any language.
