Robert Louis Stevenson
1850–1894
Scottish novelist (1850–1894), already famous for Treasure Island (1883) when The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) made his name a byword for a divided self. Often in poor health, he travelled widely in search of a better climate and spent his final years in Samoa, where he is buried. His fiction mixes adventure plotting with real psychological unease.
