Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's book. Bored on a riverbank, Alice follows a waistcoated White Rabbit down a hole and into a world where she keeps changing size and nothing keeps to ordinary logic. She meets the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, a Mad Tea-Party and a card-playing Queen who is quick to order beheadings. Short, funny and full of wordplay, it helped free children's writing from open moral instruction and influenced later fantasy and nonsense verse.
