Orphaned and raised without affection, Jane Eyre trains as a teacher and takes a post as governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer, Mr Rochester. A secret in the house forces her to choose between passion and self-respect. Told in the first person with unusual directness, it combines social criticism, Gothic atmosphere and a heroine who insists on her own worth.
